The Cult I Almost Joined – Young Living Essential Oils

Young Living Essential Oils is a cult, and an MLM. I almost joined the cult in college, but I got informed and avoided it. I used to thing Young Living was a scam and nothing more, but after having studied the work of cult expert and psychologist, Steven Hassan, I now know otherwise. D. Gary Young is a scam artist, criminal, and conman of the highest order. Contrary to what he taught, essential oils don’t work as medicine, and they certainly don’t cure cancer. Whether it’s Young Living, Doterra, or any other multilevel marketing company selling oils, keep in mind that oils have minimal use outside of aromatherapy for comfort/relaxation.

Thanks to Telltale for introducing me to the BITE model and Hassan’s work on cult psychology, and for contributing an awesome part to this video. Subscribe to Telltale:

The Medical Professional, Medical Schools, FDA are setup to make billions by keeping you sick to make money. Oils have been around for thousands of years and proven by ancients to be effective. Jesus used Oils like Frankensece. Oils are very effective and have been used for thousands of years long before modern medicine that is designed to supress symptoms not heal the body.ThE FDS will never tell the truth about oils and herbs because they make billions to keep you sick. Oils have been known to heal for thousands of years. If you believe in Cheomothery you really have not done any research and know nothing.  I have taken essential oils and I have found that they are fake oils but are truth to what has been reported..

Try a cod liver oil Pepto Bismol smoothie, it will clean you out. Add a few toadstools with a pinch of lizard dung, then sprinkle roach legsinto the mixture.

essential oils can’t cure any illness- that’s just fact. you can’t buy pure rose oil and expect your eczema to go away. you can’t sniff a cotton ball with a drop of lavender to cure a debilitating panic disorder in place of medication. i do think that essential oils can help- diffusing peppermint when i feel nauseous helps me. diluting bergamot to use as spot treatment helps heal pimples. however "ingesting oils clove, frankincense, ledum, orange, tsuga, and lavender to stimulate anti-tumor activity," as my mom’s old young living desk reference book says, WILL NOT cure colon cancer!! on top of that preaching about ingesting eos… if you did lemon oil that’s like, the acidity of 100 lemons in a drop :/

‘Silexan’ is an example of a clinically studied and proven help for generalised anxiety disorder, as effective as common benzodiazepines, without the notable side effects, addiction potential (it are drugs/psychoactive compounds after all) and withdrawal.
It is a standardized Lavandula angustifolia (the common or English lavender) oil, with a certain consistent percentage of linalool & linalyl acetate.
    A quick google search:

Of course a lot of claims are new agey bs, but also a lot of claims are actually valid, TO SOME DEGREE. Not all of them, but a lot of oils have already been studied. There just isn’t much interest for it because you can make waaay more money as a pharmaceutical company by patenting 1 single molecule/substance, while essential oils still are a lipid mixture of several volatile compounds.
Xanax is 1 molecule, fluoxetine, paroxetine, citalopram, valium, aripiprazol, seroquel, zyprexa, … all consist of 1 active compound, while essential oils have tens of them.
The same kind of reasoning can be applied to cannabis oils & preparations, it contains about 100 cannabinoids (THC and CBD are just 2 of them!), 200 terpenes in varying degrees & about 20 flavonoids.

A lot of the components of essential oils are pharmacologically active, so claiming they do nothing is not right.
Nature is full of molecules that are medicinally useful. Keep in mind that before the industrial revolution no culture whatsoever used anything else BUT herbal medicines.
About half of all substances in the pharmacies are derived from natural compounds in fact.

    P.S.: phytotherapy ≠ homeopathy!!

Sometimes when I have an itchy/spastic foot for example, and apply 1-2 drops of lavender oil, it’s gone within a matter of seconds!
Common terpenes like limonene, linalool, geraniol, citral, citronellol, etc. are commonly added to cleaning products, not just for the nice smell though.
Lots of essential oils are proven to be antibiotic, antifungal and some antiviral; desinfectants basically.

  13. Freya Mariano on April 19, 2019 at 6:07 pm

Thank you for the great video, and for confirming my distrust of this company. I love the many uses of essential oils. And I’m instinctively leery of any over the top fervent beliefs, as well as those pyramid scheme type organizations. I buy my essential oils from companies that produce them and sell them. I don’t need a religion to go with it, or a new career, so I’ve always steered well clear of Young Living and that sort of ilk. Also, they contribute to misinformation by promoting absurd concepts like the whole cure for cancer crap, which in the end turns people off to the true benefits that may actually be real. Essential oils can be wonderful mood adjuvants, and may help with ailments like migraines. And they smell pretty. I love spinach and I’m pretty sure it’s good for me but I wouldn’t join a spinach cult. If you know what I mean.

I’m curious about your views on essential oils at this point. I’m sure you’re staying far away from Young Living, but do you use other brands of essential oils for personal use?

  16. K J on April 19, 2019 at 6:15 pm

Wow, sounds like the founder has an "allergy" to decent business schemes.

  17. Emily Christine on April 19, 2019 at 6:20 pm

I use oils for some things…like I use peppermint and eucalyptus to help with aches and stuff sometimes. But you can also find those two things in a lot of the muscle relaxing creams and stuff. I also don’t believe they’re going to cure what’s causing the soreness and heck they may not even actually help with it… Placebo is a powerful thing… But I also just get mine from Amazon or Walmart and I use them knowing that they’re not gonna fix anything more than a cough drop or icy hot does.

  18. resdraon on April 19, 2019 at 6:21 pm

You guys are idiots. Essential oils do work and cured my son of autism. He kept meowing so I took him to the doctor to see what they could do, the quacks just said "he’s simply pretending to be a cat." Idiots. However after I force fed him about 2 gallons of lavender he finally stopped.

    I sure showed those doctors.

  20. Tara Rose on April 19, 2019 at 6:23 pm

A former roommate of mine got really into this Young Living crap several years back. She was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and began taking the oils as a replacement for her meds and kept saying how natural and wonderful the oils were and that she was better. My boyfriend at the time had just finished med school and was about to start his residency. He warned her, but she basically told him his entire profession was based on lies and he was a tool of western medical conspiracies. Yeah, not manic sounding at aallll (/s). To keep a long story short: She was NOT better and living with her was an abject nightmare. tl;dr: I cosign this video.

  21. Rock Hawkins on April 19, 2019 at 6:23 pm

If you are not a total f****** idiot take them for what they are the oils have been curing things since the beginning of mankind since the beginning of Moses really can you not figure this s*** out for yourself are you that f****** stupid

  22. Liz on April 19, 2019 at 6:24 pm

Anyone who is interested in essential oils knows that they do not cure they are complimentary therapies; you never never ever put neat oils on your body or hands; and you do not ingest essential oils either. How the hell can they get people to join when that is dangerous???

  39. Sue M on April 19, 2019 at 6:40 pm

I’ve never joined Young living, but I’ve used some oils. They healed my daughter’s out of control rash the Dr couldn’t. Dr got mad when I took her in to make sure it was gone and stomped out of the room. I got rid of my daughter s head lice with tea tree. And I got rid of scabies that went thru the nursing home I was working at, with oregano and tea tree and a small benign tumor on my leg at the same time. A few months ago I had a bladder infection and I used oregano in a capsule and all my passion and symptoms disappeared. Let’s not forget science changes this minds all the time you can’t trust it either. Oils were used in biblical times not just in the Bible. It’s Young living unethical and a scam.. Likely. But oils do have healing properties. They are where many of our pharmacuticals come from. Even good can heal. Don’t throw the baby out with the bath water

  40. fandore12 on April 19, 2019 at 6:40 pm

some oils are tested through the ages and really do help (AS A MINOR HELPER) to various problems a person can get through out their lives, but i agree with the host, most of these products claim directly what (THEIR) oils can do and often, if one is misguided and misinformed, it can cause more harm then good… YL is over priced and determined to propagate their product instead of being honest with thier consumers… some oils that are known to work are oregano oil, eucalypti oil, and thieves/clove oil… these can help sustain an ailment but never a direct cure! there are herbs and cures from nature and i can see how plants can help cure disease but the science to prove and carefully balance out the potency is something that should be researched and tested! a prime example to a cure that has quite a lot of proof to it is Manuka honey, i contracted MERCA three years back and did several hours of research till i decided to give it a try, three weeks later, my MERCA was gone. so the lesson here is 1) dont depend on one "miracle" cure for any problems you may have, instead, do some research and look up all the evidence you can. 2) never depend on just one solution. especially with oils. oils tend to help with the inflammatory issues but dont tend to treat, or rarely tend to treat the overall problem, for that, it would be better to use oils to help lesson the overall affects of the problem, not to cure it. hope this helps people who are using oils.

Unfortunately my aunt believed the lies they were saying. She was recovering from leukaemia and was SUPPOSE to be taking medication for it but stopped and started using young living, it wasn’t long until she started selling them. fast forward and shes developed a nasty rash on her arm, she applied essential oils on it but after 3 months of it getting progressively worse she finally went to the doctors and turns out her cancer had came back again. She had stage 4 Cancer, lost all her hair and had a 2 year old son at the time. She still has cancer but she is recovering, if she never took young living essential oils in the first place and continued taking her medication the cancer probably would of never of made a comeback. Still to this day shes selling them and claiming it cures just about anything.
